DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets on Friday made a qualifying offer to restricted free agent guard J.R. Smith, who has spent the last two seasons with the team after being acquired from the Chicago Bulls in July 2006.
In accordance with the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, a team must make a qualifying offer prior to June 30 to retain its right of first refusal with a restricted free agent.
Smith can sign with another team, but the Nuggets have the right to match any offer.
Smith has averaged 12.6 points per game while shooting 39.6 percent from 3-point range in his two seasons with the Nuggets. Last season, he averaged 12.3 points in 74 contests.
