Dave Bing being sworn in Monday as Detroit mayor
May 11, 2009 - 11:43 AM DETROIT(AP) -- Former NBA star Dave Bing will be sworn in Monday as Detroit's third mayor in eight months.City Clerk Janice Winfrey will administer the oath of office to the businessman and former Detroit Pistons great.
Bing beat incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. in a special runoff election last Tuesday and serves through year's end to finish the second four-year term of convicted ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Cockrel became mayor when Kilpatrick resigned in September before serving a jail sentence for lying in court.
Bing is expected to tackle a budget deficit estimated at $250 million to $300 million.
The 65-year-old Bing has said he'll run for a full, four-year term that begins in 2010.
No one has shouted yet.
