New Mexico State hoops coach Theus reprimanded by WAC
Mar 29, 2007 - 10:00 PM DENVER (Ticker) -- New Mexico State men's basketball coach Reggie Theus was reprimanded Thursday for violating the Western Athletic Conference's sportsmanship policy. The violation stemmed from Theus' actions March 8 in a WAC tournament game against Boise State. The 49-year-old Theus left the bench during the contest and walked onto the court after one of his players was intentionally fouled.
"While I understand the emotion that occurs during a game, the WAC has set standards that coaches and student-athletes are expected to follow," WAC commissioner Karl Benson said. "Coach Theus' actions clearly violated those standards and cannot be tolerated."
A 13-year NBA veteran, Theus owns a 41-23 record in two seasons at New Mexico State. This past season, he guided the Aggies to a 25-9 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament - the school's first tourney appearance since 1999.
