AD who brought Knight to Texas Tech is retiring
Aug 26, 2010 - 8:15 PM By BETSY BLANEY Associated Press WriterLUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers is retiring after a 14-year tenure that included the firing of football coach Mike Leach and the final days of Bob Knight's basketball coaching career.
The school said Thursday that Myers will step down in May.
Myers was involved in contentious contract negotiations with Leach less than a year before the coach was fired in December over allegations that he mistreated a player with a concussion. Leach has sued the university.
Myers is a former Red Raiders basketball coach whose teams won two Southwest Conference titles and went to four NCAA tournaments in his 20 years. He became AD in 1996, and helped lured Knight to the West Texas campus in 2001 after his departure from Indiana.
