Nash named coach at alma mater Hawaii
Apr 14, 2007 - 1:09 AM HONOLULU (Ticker) -- Bob Nash was named men's basketball coach at Hawaii, the school announced Friday.A Rainbow Warriors associate coach for the past 20 years, Nash succeeds former boss Riley Wallace. He also was an All-American player for Hawaii, holding the school record for rebounds in a game (30) and a single season (361).
"We conducted a thorough national search, and Nash emerged as the best person to lead our men's basketball program," Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier said. "In addition to his outstanding skills as a basketball coach, Bob is a wonderful person and incredible role model for student-athletes."
Nash has spent 28 seasons associated with the program as a player, graduate assistant, assistant and associate coach. He has been part of 11 of the school's 12 all-time postseason appearances, helping Wallace churn out consistent winners - including 16 winning campaigns in 20 years.
"(The hiring committee) has entrusted me with this basketball program," Nash said. "I'm humbled by the outpouring of support I have received from community and coaching friends across the country. My alma mater has called, and I'm ready to serve."
The seventh pick in the 1972 NBA draft, Nash spent parts of five seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Kansas City Kings and the ABA's San Diego Conquistadors. He also played three campaigns in Sweden.
