Hawaii coach Arnold signs new 3-year deal

Nov 12, 2011 - 12:06 AM Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Hawaii head basketball coach Gib Arnold signed a new three-year contract with performance bonuses that could extend the deal to 2017.

The contract was announced Friday and is retroactive to July 1.

Arnold, who was hired in March 2010, can earn automatic one-year extensions on his deal up to a maximum of three additional years by reaching performance- based benchmarks in each of the next three seasons.

Hawaii won 19 games in Arnold's first season, nearly doubling its 10-win total from the previous year. It was the most victories for the school in seven years and tied Arnold with Bruce O'Neil for the most by a first-year Hawaii head coach.

"I'm glad that we've completed this contract and this helps insure Gib will be with us for at least three years and hopefully for six or even more years," athletic director Jim Donovan said in a statement. "I fully expect with the recruits that Gib has brought in and returning players we have, it should be another fantastic season."

Among the benchmarks in Arnold's new contract are bonuses for participating in the NCAA or NIT Tournaments and minimum win totals of between 18 and 20 games over the next three seasons.

The deal also includes a bonus structure for attendance, season ticket sales, wins on national television, winning the Diamond Head Classic, winning the regular season conference championship, being named conference or national coach of the year, team public autograph sessions and postseason appearances.

Arnold's father coached the Warriors from 1985-87.
