Louisville's Ware resting after surgery
Apr 1, 2013 - 5:46 PM Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Louisville guard Kevin Ware remained in an Indianapolis hospital Monday after undergoing surgery to repair a broken right leg.Ware suffered a gruesome compound fracture after he landed awkwardly while trying to block a shot in the first half of Louisville's eventual 85-63 win over Duke. He was taken from the court on a stretcher and to Methodist Hospital.
A two-hour procedure on Sunday night included the insertion of a rod to stabilize the bone, which had punctured the skin. The bone was re-set and the wound was closed.
Louisville head coach Rick Pitino stayed in Indianapolis on Sunday night to be with Ware, who is expected to remain hospitalized until Tuesday.
"He's doing terrific, in great spirits," said Pitino on a conference call Monday.
The school sent a picture on Twitter with Ware walking on crutches Monday.
A timetable has not been set for his return to competition, but Pitino said he expects Ware will be able to travel with the team to Atlanta for the Final Four next weekend.
"He'll be with us in Atlanta," Pitino added. "Kevin is from Atlanta. He gets to go home, be with his family and be with us on the bench."
Ware entered Sunday's Midwest Regional final averaging 4.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 16.7 minutes per game, but was coming off a career-high 11-point performance in Friday's 77-69 win over Oregon in the Sweet 16.
