Tubby Smith lands in Lubbock
Apr 2, 2013 - 5:30 AM Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Tubby Smith wasn't out of a job long.Fired as the men's basketball coach at Minnesota on March 25, Smith has agreed to become the new coach at Texas Tech.
The school will make the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday.
Smith spent six years rebuilding a Minnesota program hit by an academic scandal and led the Golden Gophers to a record of 124-81 with a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances. The Gophers never had a losing season under Smith, but were just 46-62 in Big Ten play and never finished better than sixth in the conference.
Minnesota fired Smith after a 21-13 season that included an 83-63 win over UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The season ended with a 78-64 loss to Florida in the third round.
Before taking over at Minnesota, Smith was the head coach at Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky. He won the SEC Tournament five times and the 1998 NCAA championship with the Wildcats.
Smith's overall record is 511-226 over 22 seasons.
Texas Tech was 11-20 this past season under interim coach Chris Walker, who took over in September after the resignation of Billy Gillispie. Gillispie was 8-23 in his lone season and departed after reports had surfaced that he mistreated players.
No one has shouted yet.
