Roy Williams disputes McCants' academic fraud comments

Jun 6, 2014 - 7:31 PM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams disputes comments made by former Tar Heels star Rashad McCants that the coach knew about potential academic fraud at the university.

McCants, in a story for ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Friday, said tutors wrote papers for him and that he rarely went to class during his time at North Carolina and remained eligible to play.

In addition, McCants said Williams knew about the "paper-class" system, in which players didn't have to attend class and were required to only submit one term paper to receive a grade.

"I strongly disagree with what Rashad has said," said Williams in a statement released by the university Friday. "In no way did I know about or do anything close to what he says and I think the players whom I have coached over the years will agree with me. I have spent 63 years on this earth trying to do things the right way and the picture he portrays is not fair to the university or me."

McCants spent three seasons at North Carolina from 2002-05 and helped the 2004-05 squad capture the national championship.
