Vols PG Lopez to miss season with torn ACL

Jul 29, 2014 - 7:00 PM Knoxville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Tennessee point guard Brandon Lopez will miss the upcoming season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee playing basketball with teammates, the school said Tuesday.

Tennessee said in a news release the injury happened Saturday.

Lopez, a walk-on entering his senior season, has scored just five points in three seasons for Tennessee but new Volunteers coach Donnie Tyndall said the 6-foot-1 guard "had worked himself into a position where he was competing for a starting role."

"It's very disappointing for our team, but it's even more disappointing for a great young man who has worked extremely hard this offseason," Tyndall said in a statement. "Brandon's positive attitude and upbeat mentality will get him through this tough time."

Lopez appeared in 31 games of the past three seasons. He attempted 10 shots in 2012-13, making two.
