TCU comes calling on No. 16 Oklahoma

Feb 28, 2015 - 4:00 PM Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - The 16th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners will try and extend a two-game win streak as they host the TCU Horned Frogs in a Big 12 Conference showdown Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Oklahoma has squeaked by in its last two outings to pull off conference wins, defeating Texas by two points (71-69) almost two weeks ago, and then Texas Tech by four points (79-75) in overtime on the road last Saturday in the team's latest outing. The Sooners are 10-5 against Big 12 opponents, and are 14-1 at home.

TCU, which endured a seven-game losing streak from mid-January to mid-February, has turned things around in its last four games, albeit likely too late. TCU has won three of its last four, with a 71-54 thumping of Texas Tech on Wednesday serving as the team's latest victory. The Horned Frogs are still just 4-11 against league competition this season.

Oklahoma has dominated the all-time series against TCU, owning a 15-2 advantage over the Horned Frogs. The Sooners took a 68-56 victory over TCU in Fort Worth back on Feb. 7 and are seeking the regular-season sweep.

TCU limited Texas Tech to just 34 percent shooting on Wednesday night as the Horned Frogs, who connected on 44.4 percent of their attempts from the field in the game, coasted to a 17-point conference win. Kyan Anderson led the charge for the Frogs in the win, netting 17 points with six assists. Trey Zeigler chipped in with 15 points, and both Kenrich Williams and Amric Fields added 10 points apiece. Williams tallied a double-double with 16 rebounds in the contest, and Fields pulled down six boards of his own in the win.

The Horned Frogs have built an offense that doesn't rely largely on one player, although Anderson has played the role of go-to scorer when needed. He's the only TCU player to average a double-digit scoring figure this season at 13.1 ppg, connecting on 39.1 percent of his field-goal tries. He also leads the team with 120 assists on the year, and his 4.3 apg mark ranks fourth in the Big 12 Conference, while his 40 steals is another team best. Zeigler is on the cusp of double-digit scoring, netting 9.3 ppg. Williams (5.9 rpg) checks in just ahead of Chris Washburn (5.8 rpg) for the team lead in rebounding, although the latter tops the squad with 40 blocked shots. TCU is netting a healthy 68.5 ppg this season, and is holding opponents to 60.4 ppg - second- best in the conference.

Oklahoma allowed Texas Tech to connect on 59.1 percent of its shots in the game last Saturday when the Sooners were last in action. Fortunately for Oklahoma, the Sooners buried all three of their field goal tries in the overtime period against the Red Raiders, and made 4-of-6 from the free-throw line to earn the win. Isaiah Cousins netted 22 points to lead Oklahoma to victory, while Frank Booker chipped in with 17 points off the bench. TaShawn Thomas added 15 points with seven rebounds to close out the double-digit scorers for the Sooners. Buddy Hield scored eight points, but turned the ball over five times.

The eight points for Hield didn't help his scoring average, but the Sooners' star still leads the conference in the category with 16.9 ppg on 42.9 percent shooting from the floor. Cousins contributes 12.1 ppg for the Sooners, while Thomas (11.0 ppg) and Ryan Spangler (10.4 ppg) round out a group of double- digit scorers for Oklahoma. Spangler leads the team on the glass with a 7.9 rpg mark, ranking third in the Big 12. The Sooners are averaging 72.6 ppg as a unit, which checks in at third in the conference in scoring offense, and are giving up 62.3 ppg to opponents on 37.9 percent shooting.
