San Diego hires Lamont Smith as coach
Apr 1, 2015 - 2:04 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The University of San Diego has hired Lamont Smith as its new head men's basketball coach, the school announced Tuesday evening.Smith, 39, spent the past two years as the associate head coach at New Mexico under Craig Neal.
He was a member of the San Diego basketball team from 1994-99, starting all 27 games as a senior.
Smith replaces Bill Grier, who was fired March 16 after going 117-144 in eight seasons coaching the Toreros.
The school said Smith will be formally introduced at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.
