Rasheed Sulaimon headed to Maryland

May 11, 2015 - 6:56 PM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Rasheed Sulaimon will continue his college basketball career at Maryland.

Sulaimon was dismissed from the Duke squad in January for unspecified reasons, with coach Mike Krzyzewski saying at the time the junior guard was "unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program."

Duke went on to win the national championship.

Sulaimon remained in school and is scheduled to graduate from Duke this summer with a degree in sociology, doing so in just three years. He will be eligible to play immediately for Maryland and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

"I've known Rasheed and his family since he was in the seventh grade, first meeting him when he attended our basketball camp at Texas A&M," said Maryland coach Mark Turgeon in a statement Monday. "He was a very polite and poised young man and I recruited him while I was at Texas A&M because of his commitment to both academics and athletics.

"We competed against Rasheed on multiple occasions in the ACC and I was reminded of his dynamic playmaking ability. During our conversations with Rasheed and his parents, Kenny and Angela, Rasheed expressed the importance of proving that he is committed to being a great student-athlete and a selfless teammate. I have full confidence that Rasheed will embrace this opportunity at the University of Maryland."

Turgeon's Maryland teams played against Sulaimon when the Terrapins were a member of the ACC before moving to the Big Ten this past season.

"I am extremely grateful to the University of Maryland and Coach Turgeon for this opportunity to further my education and continue to play the game I love," said Sulaimon. "I'm looking forward to starting this next chapter at Maryland."

Sulaimon had averaged 7.5 points in 20 games for Duke this past season, all off the bench, before his exit. He averaged 11.6 points as a freshman and 9.9 points last season, but his playing time had diminished since starting 33 games in his freshman season.
