Wiggins to transfer to UMass
May 19, 2008 - 7:16 PM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Former Connecticut guard Doug Wiggins will transfer to Massachusetts, the Hartford Courant reported Monday. An East Hartford native, Wiggins announced last month that he would be leaving Connecticut after two turbulent seasons with the Huskies.
He failed two drug tests while at UConn and was suspended for two games last season after being cited for possession of alcohol by a minor and issued a summons for driving with a suspended license.
The Connecticut high school player of year in 2005-06, Wiggins showed flashes of brilliance with the Huskies, scoring 40 points in a three-game stretch during UConn's 10-game winning streak last season.
Ultimately, however, Wiggins was a disappointment, averaging under seven points per game in his two seasons.
Wiggins is looking forward to playing for new Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg, according to Anthony Menard, his coach at East Hartford High School.
"He loves Kellogg and his staff," Menard told the Courant. "He loves their commitment to playing fast in a wide-open system with (Wiggins) as the point guard."
No one has shouted yet.
