INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- In the wake of an additional violation concerning embattled former men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson, Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan announced Thursday that he is resigning at the end of the calendar year.

After listening to Indiana's defense of recruiting allegations committed by Sampson earlier this month, the NCAA infraction committee decided to levy a sixth major penalty against the school, as it failed to adequately monitor Sampson, who was forced to leave Oklahoma in 2006 due to numerous illegal phone calls.

Sampson resigned from Indiana on February 22 following the latest revelation of allegations.

"Without question, I am extremely disappointed in the new charges brought by the NCAA Committee on Infractions against Indiana University that were released today," Greenspan said. "I disagree with these charges, particularly since the NCAA Enforcement staff did not reach this same conclusion after their original, in-depth investigation. Nevertheless, the new charges must and will be answered."

In accepting his decision, Indiana University president Michael McRobbie praised Greenspan for his accomplishments as athletic director.

"It is common knowledge that IU athletics had significant financial difficulties before Rick took over," McRobbie commented. "He has focused attention in the department to correcting that situation and today our athletics finances are substantially improved and IU's athletic department is now on stable ground financially."
