LAWRENCE, Kansas (Ticker) -- Bill Self, who guided Kansas to the national championship last season, is committed to staying at the school well into the next decade.
Self on Wednesday signed a 10-year deal extension that will keep him under contract at Kansas through 2018 and provide an annual compensation package of $2.2 million.
A week after winning the title, Self agreed in principle to the deal, turning down overtures from Oklahoma State. His prior contract, which was set to expire in March of 2011, paid him an annual total of 1.6 million.
"I have said many times that I cannot imagine a better place to play or to coach than the University of Kansas," said Self, who has posted a 142-32 record (.816) in his five seasons as coach of the Jayhawks. "My family and I look forward to being part of the Lawrence community for many years to come."
Last season, Kansas (37-3) won its first national championship in 20 years, rallying from a nine-point deficit in the final 2:12 of the title game to post a 75-68 overtime triumph against Memphis.
"He has done a tremendous job leading the Kansas men's basketball program both on and off the court," Kansas athletics director Lew Perkins said. "There's no one I'd rather have at the helm of the Kansas program."
While at Kansas, Self , 46, has guided the Jayhawks to at least a share of the last four Big 12 Conference regular-season titles and the last three Big 12 tournament crowns.
Under Self's leadership, Kansas also reached the elite eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007, something he also accomplished while at Tulsa and Illinois.
Self has an overall mark of 349-137, beginning his coaching career at Oral Roberts in 1993. After three seasons at Illinois, he took the Kansas job in 2003, replacing Roy Williams.
