AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- Former Iowa State men's basketball coach Glen Anderson, who posted the third-most wins in school history during his 12-year tenure, has died. He was 79.
School officials said Anderson died Friday at his home in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
A two-time all-conference selection during his playing days at Colorado A&M, Anderson began his head coaching career with the Cyclones in 1959 after four years as an assistant under Bill Strannigan. Anderson led Iowa State to a 15-9 mark during his first season. He compiled a 142-161 overall record before being fired following a 5-21 campaign in 1970-71.
"Glen was a great friend and he gave me a chance to get into college coaching," said Arnie Gaarde, who played and later coached under Anderson at Iowa State. "He had an outstanding basketball mind and was well respected by the other Big Eight coaches."
Anderson had six winning seasons during his time at the helm, and is one of just four coaches in school history to win a conference tournament title. He accomplished the feat during his first season, as he led the Cyclones to a Big Eight Holiday Tournament Title.
