LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Southern California sophomore guard Marcus Simmons underwent surgery to remove an additional bone growth from his left leg due to complications from an ankle injury, the school announced on Friday.

The procedure was performed by Dr. David Thordarson at USC Hospital. Simmons will be out eight to 12 weeks.

Simmons sprained his ankle on the first day of practice last fall and was limited to 15 games as a true freshman. The surgery was needed to removed the bone growth that had developed between the tibia and fibula as a result of the trauma from the sprain.

Simmons scored eight points and grabbed 23 rebounds last season.
