Ole Miss G Gaskins out for season

Nov 8, 2008 - 12:03 AM OXFORD, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Ole Miss sophomore guard Trevor Gaskins will undergo season-ending surgery after tearing his ACL in practice, the team announced on Friday.

It is a tough blow for the Rebels, who open the season at home against Arkansas State on November 14.

Gaskins earned SEC All-Freshman team after averaging 5.9 points in 35 games last season. The 6-2, 203-pound Gaskins made eight starts and was third on the team with 46 3-pointers. His sophomore season ended before it began when he suffered the injury in practice Thursday.

Gaskins was expected to contribute to a deep backcourt that is rivaled only by conference preseason favorite Tennessee. He set a school record with seven 3-pointers in his first career game against Mississippi Valley State.

"This is disheartening for Trevor," head coach Andy Kennedy said.

"He has worked so hard throughout the offseason and really put himself in position to have big sophomore year. I'm terribly disappointed for him, but Trev is a tremendous competitor who will overcome this setback and have a very bright future in our program."
