New Mexico State G Joyner arrested for marijuana possession

Feb 6, 2009 - 12:59 AM LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (Ticker) -- New Mexico State freshman guard Terrance Joyner was arrested for possession of marijuana after he attempted to take it on the team's road trip to Utah State, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported Thursday.

Joyner was arrested at El Paso International Airport on Wednesday morning after his checked bag was discovered to have under two ounces of marijuana, the Sun-News reported.

New Mexico State, which faces No. 22 Utah State on Thursday night, announced late Wednesday that Joyner was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

The 6-2 Joyner had appeared in 14 games for the Aggies this season, averaging 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds in just under 12 minutes per game after being cleared academically for the second semester.

Flagged by TSA agents, Joyner's bag contained 1 1/2 marijuana cigarettes or about a tenth of an ounce, according to the newspaper. The small amount prevented any federal charges.

If found guilty of the possession charge - a Class B misdemeanor in Texas, Joyner faces a penalty of 180 days in jail and/or a $2,000 fine, the report stated.
