Dayton G Lowery out for rest of season

Feb 12, 2009 - 11:35 PM DAYTON, Ohio (Ticker) -- Dayton guard Rob Lowery will miss the remainder of the season following surgery on his right knee, the school announced Thursday.

Lowery suffered a torn patellar tendon in the first half of Wednesday's 71-58 victory over No. 14 Xavier, as the Flyers snapped a six-game losing streak against the Musketeers.

The surgery was performed earlier Thursday at Miami Valley South Hospital and will sideline the junior for five to six months.

"This is a tough thing for anyone who has the passion to play that Rob does," Dayton coach Brian Gregory said. "I said in the postgame interviews last night that Rob is the kind of young man you are proud to have in your program because of how much he has worked to better himself as a player, a student and a man in the six months he has been with us. That kind of mentality will help him immensely as he works to return to the court this summer.

"The No. 1 priority is, and will continue to be, Rob's health and well-being."

The Flyers' third-leading scorer and top reserve, Lowery scored three points in six minutes prior to the injury.

On the season, Lowery has averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 assists in 25 games this season.

With the big win over Xavier, Dayton (22-3) pulled into a tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference with an 8-2 record. It will host Richmond on Saturday.
