RICHMOND, Virginia (Ticker) -- Virginia Commonwealth officially named Shaka Smart as its new men's basketball coach on Thursday.
A former assistant at Florida, Smart replaced Anthony Grant, who accepted the coaching position at Alabama last Friday after guiding the Rams to the Colonial Athletic Conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Smart, who turns 32 on April 8, will be the 10th head coach in VCU's 41-year history.
"I am thrilled to be a part of VCU Basketball," Smart said. "I can't wait to hit the ground running. I've been fortunate to work with some great coaches over the years, from Billy Donovan, to Oliver Purnell to Keith Dambrot, who have helped me prepare for this moment."
