NCAA committee wants composite-barrel bats tossed

OMAHA, Neb.(AP) -- College baseball is getting ready to crack down on composite-barrel bats.

The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee has proposed an indefinite moratorium on the bats after anecdotal evidence and research conducted at the Division I national tournament indicated many of the bats didn't comply with NCAA standards.

The NCAA requires a bat's so-called "exit speed" to be no greater than that of its wooden counterpart, lest it become a safety hazard for infielders and pitchers.

The exit speed is how fast the ball comes off the bat. Some 20 of the 25 bats tested exceeded NCAA limitations.
