OMAHA, Nebraska (Ticker) -- The road to the Final Four must wait another day.
The College World Series elimination game between North Carolina and Louisiana State was suspended Thursday due to inclement weather and will resume Friday at 7:08 p.m. EDT.
The winner will advance to the NCAA tournament's semifinals.
The entire schedule has been pushed back one day, resulting in Fresno State having to wait until Saturday to play the winner of the contest between the Tar Heels and Tigers. Friday's game pitting Georgia against Stanford also was moved to Saturday.
Thunderstorms and lightning caused the NCAA to delay the game for over three hours before it finally was suspended.
"Mother Nature wins again," North Carolina coach Mike Fox said. "There's nothing we can do about it. This happens in baseball. Both teams were here for a long time. I think it made sense not to hang around here longer."
The contest will resume with the Tar Heels owning a 2-0 lead and having the bases loaded with one out in the first inning. Tim Fedroff delivered an RBI double and Chad Flack drew a bases-loaded walk to give North Carolina the two-run bulge.
"It was a rough start for us, obviously," LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said. "It's going to be a long night sleeping knowing that the bases are loaded with one out and we are already in a 2-0 hole. We will just have to come out tomorrow, and hopefully, we can get out of a jam and stay in the game early. We will see what happens. It was a long night, an unusual night."
