San Diego State extends Gwynn

Nov 6, 2008 - 12:44 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- San Diego State University on Wednesday announced that head baseball coach and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has signed a three-year contract extension.

Gwynn has served as head coach since 2002, guiding the Aztecs to one Mountain West Conference regular-season title while never finishing worse than third place.

"Tony Gwynn is Mr. Aztec, and we are thrilled and proud to have him as our head baseball coach for three more years," San Diego State athletic director Jeff Schemmel said. "Tony and I have discussed at length our goals and ideas for the future of the program and look forward to working hard to implement the plan and reach our championship goals."

Gwynn was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2004.

"Now that the contract has been signed, we can move forward and concentrate on our aim of making Aztec baseball a perennial contender, both in the Mountain West Conference as well as nationally," Gwynn said. "I remain fully committed to my job here at San Diego State and look forward to working with my staff and players toward these goals."

In his 20-year major league career with the San Diego Padres, Gwynn made 15 All-Star teams and won eight batting titles, finishing with a career average of .338.
