Texas names Aston women's basketball coach

Apr 3, 2012 - 4:52 PM Austin, TX (Sports Network) - The University of Texas has named Karen Aston its new women's basketball coach.

Aston was an assistant under Jody Conradt at Texas from 1998-2006. She was the head coach at North Texas this past season after a four-year run at Charlotte.

"You always want to thank those individuals that have had an impact on your growth as a coach and what led you to this point," Aston said Tuesday in a statement. "Jody [Conradt] molded me in my career and I have an enormous amount of respect and love for what she means to this university. My goals and my ambitions are to carry on the tradition of Texas women's basketball. I'm excited about the challenge and thrilled to be a part of the storied Texas tradition."

Aston led North Texas to a record of 15-16 this past season, turning around a program that had won just five games the previous year. She also notched 86 wins in four seasons at Charlotte, including a school-record 27 victories during the 2010-11 campaign.

"Karen has been a winner wherever she's been," said Texas women's athletic director Chris Plonsky. "Texas alumni and fans are familiar with Karen and have a high level of respect for her and what she's accomplished. She comes from the Texas women's basketball family, and she is the right person to carry on this the torch."

Conradt retired in the spring of 2007 and the Texas program had been headed by Gail Goestenkors, who resigned last month after five seasons. Goestenkors led the Longhorns to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and compiled a record of 102-64.
