Ex-Mich. St. RB pleads guilty to assault charges

Jan 14, 2010 - 7:24 PM EAST LANSING, Mich.(AP) -- Former Michigan State running back Ashton Leggett has pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery stemming from a campus fight late last year.

Leggett pleaded guilty Thursday in district court. An assault charge could bring up to 93 days in jail. His attorney has requested that Leggett be placed in a program that would avoid jail time.

A conspiracy to commit assault charge was dropped.

Leggett has transferred from Michigan State to Illinois State. He's one of nine players charged in connection with a Nov. 22 fight with members of a Michigan State fraternity.

Court proceedings continue for eight other players. Two have been kicked off the team, one is transferring and the other five have rejoined the team after serving a suspension.
