WR Buckner leaving Texas after arrest
Jan 14, 2010 - 11:39 PM By JIM VERTUNO AP Sports WriterAUSTIN, Texas(AP) -- Texas sophomore receiver Dan Buckner, who caught 45 passes for the Longhorns last season, will be released from his scholarship and transfer after his arrest on misdemeanor criminal trespassing and resisting arrest charges.
Buckner was arrested early Thursday in College Station. According to police, Buckner was visiting a woman at her apartment when they got into an argument and he was asked to leave.
Police said Buckner was escorted to his vehicle but refused to leave and resisted when officers tried to place him under arrest. He was released on $8,000 bond.
Buckner was the third-leading receiver for Texas and scored four touchdowns in 2009. He had one catch for minus-3 yards in Texas' 37-21 loss to Alabama in the BCS championship game.
"We've talked to Dan and his family about his recent situation and they've assured us that he doesn't think he did anything wrong and they're confident that it will be cleared up through the legal process," Brown said in a statement issued by the school.
"During our discussion with Dan and his family, we all decided that the best thing for him would be to transfer to another school."
Buckner is the second Texas receiver to be dismissed in recent weeks. Brandon Collins, who was academically ineligible last season, was kicked off the team Jan. 3 after his arrest on aggravated robbery charges.
"I've really enjoyed my time at Texas, but we've talked about my situation and I think it is best for me to get a fresh start and transfer to another school," Buckner said in a statement from the school, without indicating where he will try to go.
No one has shouted yet.
