Georgia to face Nebraska in Capital One Bowl
Dec 3, 2012 - 1:24 AM Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Georgia was eight yards away from playing for a BCS national championship, but has settled for a trip to Orlando to participate in the Capital One Bowl against Nebraska.Time ran out on the Bulldogs deep in Alabama territory in Saturday's SEC Championship Game on Saturday as they fell, 32-28, to the Crimson Tide in the de facto national title semifinal.
So instead of playing Notre Dame for the BCS crown on January 7, Georgia (11-2) will meet Nebraska on New Year's Day at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.
The only other time these programs have met happened in the 1969 Sun Bowl, a game Nebraska won, 45-6.
"I'm really excited for our team and especially our seniors with the opportunity to play in the Capital One Bowl, which is one of the premier January bowl games in the greatest of entertainment areas," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "And to play a team with the history and tradition of Nebraska will be an exciting experience for our team and coaches, but also for our fans."
This is the Bulldogs' sixth trip to the Capital One Bowl and first since 2009.
Nebraska (10-3) was embarrassed by Wisconsin, 70-31, in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night. The Cornhuskers will be making their second straight Capital One Bowl appearance, having lost to South Carolina, 30-13, last season.
