All-America Williams staying put at NDSU
Jan 6, 2013 - 1:06 AM Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - Marcus Williams couldn't fathom the thought of not trying for a shot at winning three straight national titles. The two-time All-America cornerback at North Dakota State said after the Bison won their second straight FCS national title on Saturday that he would remain in the Bison program next season and not enter the 2013 NFL Draft as a junior- eligible player.
It's rare for an FCS player to leave for the draft early, but Williams has the skills and credentials to consider joining that small group.
He intercepted two passes in Saturday's 39-13 Bison rout of Sam Houston State to become the school's all-time leader with 18 interceptions. The Missouri Valley Football Conference's defensive player of the year had seven interceptions this season.
"We're a young team this year actually," said the 5-foot-11, 194-pound finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award. "I mean, we only have about six seniors. I have to come out with the guys I came in with. I love those guys to death and I'm sure they have the attitude that we're coming back together."
The Bison, who finished with a 13-1 record for the second straight season, would be returning 20 starters next season if not for injuries. They will be heavily favored to get back to Frisco and seek a third straight national title.
No one has shouted yet.
