Savannah State football post drawing lots of interest
May 2, 2013 - 6:12 PM Savannah, GA (Sports Network) - Savannah State University hasn't had a head football coach for longer than three seasons in the last 21 years, but the opening for the position is drawing a lot of interest. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference program announced the firing of head coach Steve Davenport after two seasons on April 17. Since then, the Tigers program has drawn 84 applicants, sports information director Opio Mashariki said Thursday.
Savannah State expects to name a new head coach by June 1, he added. The new coach will be Savannah State's fourth in five seasons.
Cornerbacks coach Corey Barlow, the only assistant coach retained when Davenport was fired, is serving as the interim head coach.
The Tigers finished with a 1-10 record in each of Davenport's two seasons in charge.
