Abilene Christian trips Troy

Sep 14, 2014 - 3:48 AM Troy, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Abilene Christian's transition to the FCS is looking better all the time.

The Wildcats, in their second season on the FCS level since rising from NCAA Division II, notched one of the biggest wins in program history Saturday night, beating FBS member Troy, 38-35.

Nik Grau's 27-yard field goal with 6:10 remaining gave ACU (1-2) its first lead of the game, 31-28. The Southland Conference program later tacked on Adrian Duncan's 9-yard touchdown run.

Troy pulled within 38-35 on Brandon Burks' 1-yard run with 20 seconds left, but Abilene Christian recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran two plays to finish off the game clock.

Quarterback Parker McKenzie was 25-for-34 for 312 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions as the Wildcats became the fifth FCS team to beat an FBS opponent this season.

The last time Abilene Christian beat a team that was at the time playing at the highest level of college football and is currently an FBS program came on Nov. 14, 1959, when ACU rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to beat UTEP, 28-22, in El Paso.

Troy, from the Sun Belt Conference, fell to 0-3.
