EWU, Oregon must wait on Adams' decision

At both Eastern Washington and Oregon.

EWU quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. took his much-publicized visit to the University of Oregon this past weekend after receiving a scholarship offer from coach Mark Helfich and his Pac-12 program.

The redshirt junior, already a two-time Big Sky Conference offensive player of the year and Walter Payton Award runner-up, is scheduled to graduate from Eastern Washington in the spring and would be eligible for his final season immediately under the NCAA's graduate student transfer-exception rule.

Oregon, the 2014 national runner-up, needs to replace Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota under center next season. Adams has not been promised the starter's job and would compete with other quarterbacks in the Ducks' program if he transfers there.

Should Adams remain at Eastern Washington, he would again lead one of the elite programs in the FCS, including a winner of three straight Big Sky titles. Adams, from Pasadena, California, has accounted for 11,670 total yards (10,438 passing, 1,232 rushing) and 121 touchdowns (110 passing, 11 rushing) in 37 career games.

Adding to the prospect that Adams could make a smooth transition in transferring up a level is that he has posted huge games against two of Oregon's fellow Pac-12 schools, Oregon State and Washington. He accounted for 519 yards of offense and six total touchdowns in a 49-46 win over Oregon State to open the 2013 campaign, and passed for 475 yards and a school-record seven touchdowns in a 59-52 loss to Washington last September.
