QBs shine in Eastern Washington spring game
Apr 26, 2015 - 3:59 AM Cheney, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The quarterbacks were on target in the Eastern Washington spring football game on Saturday.Junior Jordan West, the expected starter, and redshirt freshmen Gage Gubrud and Reilly Hennessey combined to complete 27-of-32 pass attempts for 332 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles, three-time defending Big Sky Conference champions, are replacing All-American signal caller Vernon Adams Jr., who has announced he will transfer to Oregon for his senior season.
West was 10-of-14 for 112 yards, Gubrud was 10-of-11 for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Hennessey was 7-of-7 for 71 yards and a touchdown. The offense scored 39 points in the 60-play scrimmage.
"More than anything, we just wanted to see them continue to progress and just grow with a lot of the little things," head coach Beau Baldwin said of his quarterbacks. "Things like seeing and knowing where your check-downs are, getting rid of it hot, seeing the play clock and not allowing it to run out and get a delay of game."
Redshirt freshman running back Ashanti Kindle scored on two 1-yard runs. Alek Kacmarcik had seven tackles on defense, while Kody Beckering collected six tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
After the scrimmage, Eagle players and staff received their Big Sky championship rings from the 2014 season.
Eastern Washington finished with an 11-3 record and a No. 4 final ranking in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 last year.
The Eagles will open Baldwin's eighth season on Sept. 5 with a visit to Oregon.
