Wildfires force postponent of college football game
Oct 24, 2007 - 2:12 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Saturday's game between San Diego State and Brigham Young on Tuesday was rescheduled for December 1 due to raging wildfires in San Diego County. The game was scheduled to be held at Qualcomm Stadium, but the venue is being used as an evacuation center.
"This decision was an easy one to make," San Diego State athletic director Jeff Schemmel said. "We have thousands of our fellow San Diegans who are either in peril, have lost their homes or are still evacuated. Many of those evacuees are counting on Qualcomm Stadium as their temporary home.
"All of that is much more important than any athletic event. Our thoughts, prayers and most importantly, our efforts should be focused entirely on those people."
The San Diego Chargers are scheduled to host the Houston Texans on Sunday, but that game also may be in jeopardy.
The Chargers are practicing at the Arizona Cardinals' facility in suburban Phoenix.
