Duke fires football coach Ted Roof

Nov 26, 2007 - 7:17 PM DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- After another disastrous season, Duke University fired football coach Ted Roof on Monday.

Duke athletics director Joe Alleva made officially announced the decision at a news conference Monday afternoon.

"Following several conversations between Coach Roof and myself over the past two days, I have decided to move in a different direction with our football program," Alleva said. "I truly appreciate his service to Duke and how he represented himself, his family and this school. That is why this decision was so difficult."

Roof went 6-45 overall and 3-33 in the ACC in four seasons at Duke, which has lost 25 straight conference games.

The Blue Devils lost, 20-14, to rival North Carolina in their season finale Saturday, falling to 1-11 and 0-8 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

"After our annual evaluation of the program, I believe that we need to make a change based on the results we were seeing on the field each week," Alleva said. "Over the past several years, we have made the commitment to upgrading our football program and we will continue to do so."

Roof took the position seven games into the 2003 season, guiding the Blue Devils to a 2-3 record as interim coach to conclude the year. The "interim" tag was removed from his title on December 6, 2003.

Roof, who had one year remaining on his contract, posted records of 2-9, 1-10, 0-12 prior to this season.

Alleva said that the search for new coach will begin immediately.
