Edsall signs five-year deal

Feb 26, 2008 - 7:03 PM STORRS, Connecticut (Ticker) -- After guiding Connecticut to its second bowl appearance last season, Huskies coach Randy Edsall has been rewarded with a contract extension.

Edsall signed a five-year deal Tuesday that will keep him under contract at Connecticut through the 2012 season.

Entering his 10th season at the school, Edsall will have an annual salary of $1.5 million during the length of the contract. In November, he rejected overtures from Georgia Tech, saying he wanted to stay at Connecticut.

Edsall has spearheaded the Huskies' move to the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and the Big East Conference.

Last season, the Huskies finished 9-4 and gained a share of the Big East title for the first time since joining the league in 2004. They lost to Wake Forest, 24-10, in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

"I am very appreciative to be coaching at the University of Connecticut for years to come," Edsall said. "We have been able to accomplish a lot here in nine years, but we still have work to do to achieve the consistency and goals that I am looking to obtain for this football program."

Edsall has a career mark of 50-53 at Connecticut but is 39-25 in the last 64 games. In Connecticut's first bowl game in 2004, Edsall guided the Huskies to a 39-10 victory over Toledo in the Motor City Bowl.

Edsall was named Connecticut coach in 1998, replacing Skip Holtz.
