Clemson S McDaniel arrested

Jun 23, 2008 - 9:25 PM CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel was arrested this past weekend on misdemeanor charges of assault and battery.

A sophomore, McDaniel was arrested Saturday after allegedly punching and choking his girlfriend during an incident at an off-campus apartment.

According to a Central Police Department report, McDaniel struck his girlfriend in the head, face and chest with a closed fist. He also covered her head with a comforter and pushed her down a flight of stairs.

The woman, who was unnamed in the report, was treated for a cervical strain and numerous contusions at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

A promising defensive back who likely would have competed for a starting job this season, McDaniel was released on a $5,000 bond. The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden has not commented on the situation.

McDaniel appeared in 13 games for the Tigers last season, recording 33 tackles and two interceptions.
