Virginia Tech names QB Glennon as starter

Aug 26, 2008 - 5:39 PM BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Redshirt senior Sean Glennon has been Virginia Tech starting quarterback, the school announced Tuesday.

Glennon likely won the job based on his performance in last season's Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against Boston College. He outplayed first round draft pick Matt Ryan, throwing three touchdown passes in the Hokies' 30-16 victory over the Eagles.

Virginia Tech also announced that sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be a redshirt this season. Taylor, who played last season as a true freshman, will dress and travel with the team.

"This is what we think is in our best interest for the long term," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said. "Tyrod would benefit from another year of learning and this is our plan for now."

Taylor shared time with Glennon last season in Beamer's two-platoon system, completing 72-of-134 passes for 927 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 429 yards and six touchdowns on 102 carries.

Glennon completed 60.9 percent of his passes last year (143-of-235) for 1,796 yards with 12 TDs and five interceptions.

Virginia Tech opens its season Saturday against East Carolina.
