Texas, Alabama, Penn State remain 1-2-3 in AP poll

Oct 26, 2008 - 7:16 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- One day after preserving their undefeated records, Texas, Alabama and Penn State remained atop the latest Associated Press poll released Sunday.

Texas was voted the unanimous No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving 56 first-place votes and 1,625 points.

The Longhorns (8-0) remained undefeated Saturday with a hard-fought 28-24 victory over Big 12 Conference rival Oklahoma State.

Alabama (8-0) retained its spot at No. 2 following a 29-9 rout of Tennessee in Knoxville. The Crimson Tide received 1,542 points.

Despite rallying for a 13-9 victory over Big Ten rival Ohio State, Penn State (9-0) remained third with 1,503 points. Oklahoma (7-1) and Florida (6-1) rounded out the top five.

Texas Tech (8-0) climbed two spots to sixth after routing Big 12 opponent Kansas, 63-21. It is the highest ranking the Red Raiders have held since November 1976, when they also were 8-0.

Texas Tech hosts the Longhorns next weekend in a showdown with major ramifications both in the Big 12 and in the BCS title picture.

Southern California (6-1) fell one spot to seventh while Georgia (7-1) moved up to eighth after crushing Louisiana State, 52-38. Oklahoma State (7-1) and idle Utah (8-0) completed the top 10.

Undefeated Boise State (7-0), TCU (8-1), Ohio State (7-2), Missouri (6-2) and LSU (5-2) are ranked 11th through 15th, respectively.

Florida State (6-1) jumped up eight spots to 16th, followed by Brigham Young (7-1), Ball State (8-0), Tulsa (7-0) and Minnesota (7-1).

North Carolina (6-2), Michigan State (7-2) and Oregon (6-2) are ranked 21st, 22nd and 23rd, respectively. All three schools are new to the poll this week.

The poll was completed by No. 24 South Florida (6-2) and No. 25 Maryland (6-2), which also is new to the rankings. Pittsburgh, Kansas, Georgia Tech and Boston College all fell from the poll.
