Texas Tech gains ground on Alabama in AP poll

Nov 9, 2008 - 8:04 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Texas Tech gained ground on Alabama following another impressive win in prime time.

The unbeaten Red Raiders remained second in the latest Associated Press college football poll, which was released Sunday.

One of five remaining undefeated teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, Texas Tech (10-0) received 1,574 points and 21 first-place votes after crushing Big 12 rival Oklahoma State, 56-20, on Saturday night.

But the Red Raiders remained well behind top-ranked Alabama (10-0), which was given 1,604 points and the other 44 first-place votes.

The Crimson Tide preserved their perfect record Saturday with a 27-21 overtime victory at Louisiana State, a win that clinched the SEC West title for Alabama.

Florida (8-1), Texas (9-1) and Oklahoma (9-1) all climbed one spot to third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Southern California (8-1) is sixth, followed by Penn State (9-1), which fell four spots after losing a 24-23 decision to Iowa.

Utah (10-0) moved up two spots to No. 8 after maintaining its unbeaten record with Thursday night's 13-10 victory over Mountain West rival TCU.

Boise State (9-0) remained ninth while Ohio State (8-2) moved up two spots to 10th.

Oklahoma State (8-2) fell three spots to 11th, followed by Missouri (8-2), Georgia (8-2), Ball State (9-0) and TCU (9-2).

Brigham Young (9-1) is 16th while North Carolina (7-2), Michigan State (9-2), LSU (6-3) and Florida State (7-2).

Pittsburgh (7-2) moved up four spots to 21st, followed by Cincinnati (7-2), Oregon State (6-3), South Carolina (7-3) and Tulsa (8-1).

The Bearcats, Beavers, Gamecocks and Golden Hurricane all were new to the rankings, replacing West Virginia, California, Georgia Tech and Maryland.
