White sets NCAA rushing mark for quarterbacks

Nov 23, 2008 - 2:35 AM LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- West Virginia's Pat White broke the NCAA record for career rushing yards by a quarterback in Saturday's 35-21 win over Louisville.

White ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 4,292 yards in his career and breaking the previous record of 4,289 set by Missouri's Brad Smith from 2002-05.

White also broke Donovan McNabb's Big East Conference record for total touchdowns. The senior threw a pair of scores Saturday, increasing his total to 98 and surpassing McNabb's previous Big East mark of 96.

"If we don't admire what No. 5 (White) has done, I just don't know how people can go through life," West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said. "It's a tremendous honor for him, for his offensive line and for his coaching staff."

White's production is down this year after back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. The southpaw went into Saturday's contest with just 586 yards, although he missed the Syracuse game on October 11 with a concussion.

Saturday marked the fourth time he has rushed for 200 yards in a game.

"The offensive line did a great job of getting the ends cut off," White said. "They gave it to me and I tried to take it."
