Iowa State coach Chizik restructures staff

Dec 1, 2008 - 4:25 PM AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik will restructure his coaching staff following a second consecutive losing season.

Chizik announced Sunday that he will name new offensive and defensive coordinators. However, Robert McFarland, the former offensive coordinator, and Wayne Bolt, the former defensive coordinator, will stay on as assistants with the program.

"It's the head coach's responsibility to evaluate all facets of the program and make whatever changes are necessary to improve the team's overall performance," Chizik said.

McFarland will serve as the Cyclones' assistant head coach and offensive line coach while Bolt will be the linebackers coach.

Chizik also announced that Iowa State has fired quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen and secondary coach Shawn Raney.

The Cyclones went just 2-10 and failed to record a win in Big 12 Conference play this past season, their second under Chizik. A former defensive coordinator at Texas, Chizik has coached Iowa State to a 5-19 record since coming to Ames.
