Oklahoma State coach Gundy signs seven-year extension

Dec 5, 2008 - 5:42 PM STILLWATER, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- After guiding Oklahoma State to nine wins in the regular season for only the sixth time in school history, coach Mike Gundy has been rewarded with a seven-year contract extension.

The school announced Friday that the new deal will pay Gundy $15.7 million and run through December of 2015.

Gundy's average annual compensation will be in excess of $2.2 million, more than doubling his current salary of $1.053 million.

"The OSU board and administration are extremely pleased with the job coach Gundy has done in moving our football program forward," Oklahoma State president Burns Harris said. "With the caliber of student-athletes he and his staff are recruiting, and with our new facilities, the future is very bright."

Oklahoma State finished the regular season 9-3 and is ranked 15th in the coaches' poll. During the season, the Cowboys climbed into the top 10 for the first time since 1988. Its three losses came to teams that were ranked in the top three - Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

"Of course, my greatest reward is leading such an outstanding group of student-athletes," Gundy said. "I couldn't be prouder of our players and the way they perform in the classroom, on the field and as representatives of OSU."

In his fourth season at Oklahoma State, Gundy has a 27-22 mark. During his tenure, the Cowboys have improved their record in the Big 12 Conference each year, going 1-7, 3-5, 4-4 and 5-3.
