Report: Leach offered five-year extension

Dec 6, 2008 - 12:14 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- Texas Tech is doing everything it can to keep coach Mike Leach in Lubbock.

The school has offered Leach a five-year contract extension worth $12.1 million, the Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers told the newspaper that the last three years of the contract would pay Leach a total of $7 million.

A hot commodity after guiding the Red Raiders to an 11-1 record this season, Leach currently is under contract through 2010.

"We made what we think is a good offer," Myers said. "It's an offer we feel that's fiscally responsible with all the other obligations in the department. We think it's a good, fair offer. We want Mike to be our coach, and hopefully he will accept it."

The Seattle Times reported that Leach flew to Seattle on Tuesday to interview for the vacant Washington job. But according to other reports, he proceeded to remove his name from consideration.

Leach's name also has been linked to the Auburn job following the resignation of Tigers coach Tommy Tuberville earlier this week.
