Report: UCF RB Davis suffered kidney failure

Dec 8, 2008 - 5:23 PM ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Central Florida running back Brandon Davis suffered kidney failure after he collapsed during an offseason workout, his mother told the Orlando Sentinel.

Donna Davis told the newspaper that her son remained in guarded condition at Florida's Hospital East on Sunday night - four days after he collapsed in the school's weight room.

"They're still monitoring his heart, and now they're monitoring his liver as well," Donna Davis said. "He is being tested extensively. They've called in two more more specialists. His condition is still very serious."

The school issued a statement, saying it would investigate the matter.

"We became aware on Thursday that Brandon had a serious medical condition during the Wednesday workout," the statement said. "To our knowledge, the workout was a rigorous out-of-season workout, and according to staff, not atypical of a college football conditioning session."

Donna Davis told the Sentinel that her son was struggling during a weight-lifting session and questioned the way school officials handled the workout.

"He had no water in his body due to lack of breaks (in the workout) and not being given any water and fluids," Donna Davis said. "This is what my son has told me, and this is what the doctors have also stated is the cause of his injuries."

Brandon Davis' collapse came nine months after freshman wide receiver Ereck Plancher died following conditioning drills in March.

In August, the Plancher family said it intended to file a wrongful death suit against the university, citing negligence on the school's part.
