Report: Hoke to take San Diego State job

Dec 15, 2008 - 1:03 AM BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) -- San Diego State will name Ball State's Brady Hoke as its next football coach, ESPN.com reported Sunday.

According to the San Diego Times Union, the Aztecs' search has come down to three candidates: Hoke, former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione and UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker.

Hoke, who guided the Cardinals to a 12-0 regular season, also interviewed for the Auburn position. The Tigers hired former Iowa State coach Gene Chizik on Saturday.

At San Diego State, Hoke would replace Chuck Long, who was fired after posting a 2-10 record, the Aztecs' first 10-loss season in school history.

Ball State, which lost to Buffalo, 42-24, in the Mid-American Conference championship game, faces Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl on January 6.

Hoke's salary at Ball State is only $240,000, making him one of the lowest-paid coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
