Michigan State coach Dantonio signs revised contract

Dec 27, 2008 - 1:20 AM ANN ARBOR, Michigan (Ticker) -- Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio on Friday signed a revised contract, according to the web site mlive.com.

Dantonio has led the Spartans (9-3) to 16 wins and consecutive bowl appearances in his first two seasons. The school announced the deal in Orlando, Florida, where Michigan State will face Georgia (9-3) in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day.

The reports states that original length - five years - and base salary ($618,000) will remain the same, but his overall annual compensation package will jump from from $1.13 million to $1.8 million.

It also will pay him a $2 million bonus if he remains the head coach through January 15, 2016.

"This revised contract signifies a mutual commitment," Dantonio said in a statement after signing the new deal.

"The University has certainly made a commitment to provide all of the necessary tools to build a championship-caliber program, and I've made a commitment to be the head coach at Michigan State for a very long time."
