Pitt RB LeSean McCoy to return for junior season

Jan 6, 2009 - 5:01 PM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy, the Big East Conference's second-leading rusher in 2008, will return for his junior season, Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt said.

Prior to Pittsburgh's regular-season finale against West Virginia, McCoy indicated that he intended to play for the Panthers in 2009.

However, he filed paper work with the NFL Advisory Committee prior to Pittsburgh's Sun Bowl game against Oregon State to determine his status if he were to enter this year's draft.

"I had a good talk with his parents and several talks with LeSean," Wannstedt said Monday. "LeSean believes, and his mom and dad believe, that he's excited about being here and we all believe that this next year will do nothing but enhance his opportunities for the National Football League."

McCoy enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign, rushing for 1,448 yards and 21 touchdowns. However, he was limited to 85 yards in the Panthers' 3-0 loss to Oregon State in the Sun Bowl.
