Ball State QB Davis to enter NFL draft

Jan 13, 2009 - 10:27 PM MUNCIE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Ball State quarterback Nate Davis announced Tuesday he will forgo his last year of eligibility and enter the 2009 NFL draft.

The Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2008, Davis threw for 3,591 yards and 26 touchdowns with only eight interceptions this past season.

"It is with much excitement and some regret I announce my decision to declare for the NFL draft," Davis said. "I am excited to accept the challenge of being a professional athlete. It is something I have dreamed about since childhood.

"My regret is taking on this challenge at this time means I am leaving Ball State with one year of eligibility remaining and without a MAC Championship."

Davis was a finalist for the Manning Award, given to the nation's top quarterback, after leading the Cardinals to a 12-0 regular season and the school's first appearance in the MAC championship game.

But Ball State faltered in its final two games, dropping the MAC title game to Buffalo before a 45-13 trouncing at the hands of Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl on January 6.

Davis holds the school records in most passing categories, including in yards (9,233), touchdown passes (74) and completions (678).
